Metacognition is the process by which one thinks about cognitive events or processes, that is thinking about thinking. It is comprised of two conceptual frameworks or parts; metacognitive knowledge – knowledge acquire after a metacognitive process that most of the time is about task strategies and people and metacognitive regulation which is how one carries out metacognitive processes. Metacognition helps people improve their knowledge and mindset about learning and provide cognitive learning tools for the future.
This is a term used by educational theorist use to describe the capacity of one person to learn a particular topic or subject. Learning self-efficacy can affects one’s capacity to learn positively or negatively. Nevertheless, both the learning efficiency and learning effectively can be learned relearned or improved.
What is Learning?
Learning is the process by which a person gets, acquires or is instilled with new knowledge. The learning process is different from one person to another; some will learn better when they are in quite environment while others when they are in noisy places but most of the time these are just beliefs that people have. Learning is affected more by the attitude of the person, Environmental factors that is a composition of Emotional, Sociological, Physiological environments. According to Bloom learning is comprised of several levels remembering what one has learned, Understanding the concept he or she is studying, applying this knowledge to different situation that may arise or asked. Analyzing information given in detail using several approaches, evaluation of different problem or challenges for different perspectives that are applicable and creating new knowledge in terms of procedures, discoveries etc.
Self-regulation is a broader concept about how a person thinks about thinking. There are different knowledge areas; factual, conceptional, procedural, metacognitive that require different ways in order to get that knowledge. Self-regulation would be useful in identifying the best way to acquire this knowledge. Self-regulation in simple terms can be defined as a process of applying your cognitive and metacognitive process to learning. According to Dunn and Dunn improved self-regulation should reduce one’s reliance on cookie-cutter mold approaches to learning that is learning without proper understanding of the underlying concept in the study and this will greatly improve one’s learning capacity.
There are several environmental factors to be specific 4 factors that affects learning: 1. Environment which is the setting that learning is going to take place; place that have loud music or quiet places, places with bright light or dim light or even cooler or warmer areas. 2. Emotion – according to Dunn and Dunn some study when highly motivated, some have a sense of responsibility when they are studying or learning and some are more persistent than others when they are learning. 3. Sociological environment – the interaction of one person with another may also affects how one learns. This interaction can be teacher student relation or student-student relation. 4. Physiological environment – this involves how a person that is learning is processing the information that he/she is getting and how they are making decision. A person may be reflective or impulsive, analytical or global.
